Asthma Safe Kids

Asthma Safe Kids (ASK) is an in-home asthma education program for caregivers of children with asthma. The National Nursing Centers Consortium (NNCC) developed the Asthma Safe Kids curriculum (based on "Attack Asthma" literature from the American Lung Association) and trained outreach workers and staff from each participating nurse-managed health center. The ASK materials have been adapted to teach parents about how to address asthma triggers in their own home. Caregivers receive two home visits, during which the outreach worker conducts an environmental assessment and educates them on how to reduce asthma triggers in the home. Cleaning supplies are given to the caregivers and they are shown how to properly clean problematic areas. The supplies include: plastic mattress and pillow covers, laundry detergent, roach bait, rodent traps, dusting wipes and other incentives.

The goal of this program is to reduce the triggers of asthma by educating and increasing awareness to at risk populations.

NNCC has analyzed pre and post tests and first and second home visit checklists for the 205 compliant clients, showing a statistically significant difference between pre and post test scores, showing that the curriculum is successful in reducing triggers in the homes.
