Taller Tech
An Effective Practice
Description
Taller Tech is a program of Taller San Jose, an organization in Santa Ana, California, that trains young people with no marketable job skills for employment in the construction industry. This 15-week, paid apprenticeship program focuses on the fundamentals of residential construction and incorporates: safety awareness and training, industry related math, construction theory, hands-on experience, adherence to attendance policies, mentoring, job coaching and leadership development. Led by a Licensed General Contractor with more than 30 years of experience, Taller Tech is guided by a board of Orange County's largest builders and developers.
Goal / Mission
The goal of this program is to help high-risk youth develop marketable skills and to instill in students the values of dignity, responsibility and community.
Results / Accomplishments
Taller Tech claims the following results:
-87% of graduates are employed
-95% are working in the industry
-93% remain employed 12 months later
-49% are in an apprenticeship or attending college
-$11.42 per hour - average starting wage for graduates
-Of graduates who were previously incarcerated, 92% have not been rearrested.
