Unused Medications Program

Each year, thousands of Kansans go without needed medications simply because they cannot afford them. At the same time, millions of dollars of unused medications are being disposed of by medical facilities who comply with state law regarding the handling of medicines allocated to patients. Through the Utilization of Unused Medications Act (KSA 65-1668 through 1675), The Kansas Repository collects, manages, and distributes hundreds of thousands of prescribed medications that would otherwise be destroyed to Federally Qualified Health Centers, indigent health care clinics, and community mental health centers in the state. This allows uninsured Kansas access to medications they would not have.

The Unused Medications Repository, administered by Community Health Center of Southeast
Kansas, provides donated medications free of charge to eligible clinics in Kansas.

Over $20 million worth of prescription medications have been donated to low-income and uninsured Kansans.

Since 2011, 38 safety net clinics and medical centers throughout Kansas have taken part in the program.
